Managing Glanzmann's thrombasthenia in a developing country
View through CrossRef
SummaryGlanzmann's thrombasthenia is a rare inherited bleeding disorder. Patients usually present with easy bruising, epistaxis and prolonged bleeding from minor trauma or procedures. Platelet transfusions are the standard therapy but recombinant activated factor VII has also been used for the treatment of bleeding episodes. We report the successful management of a patient with Glanzmann's thrombasthenia with complex cardiac pathology who presented with a massive gastrointestinal bleed requiring emergency laparotomy. We review the current options for management and highlight the problems faced by the anaesthestist in developing countries due to poor socio‐economic status of patients.
