Kehitysmaiden naisten ja lasten terveys on kansainvälisen terveydenhuoltotyön tärkeimpiä kohteita ja huolenaiheita. Suuri lapsikuolleisuus ja voimakas väestönkasvu ovat aikaansaaneet yhä enemmän terveydenhuollon kehitys- ja tutkimusprojekteja kolmannen maailman maihin. Samaan aikaan kun tietoisuus valtavista ongelmista on lisääntynyt, on myös tajuttu, ettei länsimaisen teknologian siirto sellaisenaan voi ratkaista niitä. Kehitysmaiden terveysviranomaiset ovatkin viimeisten reilun kymmenen vuoden ajan tietoisesti etsineet ainakin osittaisia ratkaisuja terveydenhuollon ongelmiin omista voimavaroistaan, perinteisistä parannuskeinoista.
