Abstract
Vladimir Ilich Lenin founded the Soviet Union, the world’s first communist state. He led a branch of the Russian Marxist movement known as the Bolsheviks that took advantage of Russia’s defeat in World War I to seize power. Renamed the Communist Party, Lenin’s forces then consolidated power by winning a bloody civil war. Lenin used coercion to impose a centrally planned economic system and a political system that concentrated all power in the hands of the Communists and made liberal use of violence. The multinational state that the Communists created was called the Soviet Union, and it lasted until 1991.
