Saint Teofana Basarab represents one of the most important nuns in the Romanian
and Bulgarian Orthodoxy of the 14th century. Daughter of Basarab I, founder of
Wallachia, Teofana was a symbol of the political-spiritual connections between the
Romanian and the Bulgarian area. Her activity and personality are closely connected
to the cultural and religious context of the epoch, marked by the rise of the
hesychastic movement and the consolidation of the Orthodox monasticism in the
Balkans
