Dentale erosjoner blant studenter i Oslo i 2010

View through CrossRef
English summary Dental erosion among Norwegian students living in Oslo in 2010 988-94. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of dental erosive wear among students living in Oslo and to get information on their knowledge of and attitudes to such tooth wear. A total of 102 students (mean age 23 years), accepted to participate. In connection with intraoral examination and close-up photographs, performed by senior dental students, each participant was asked to fulfill a questionnaire in their student resident. Selected tooth surfaces, 1224, were evaluated for erosive wear on the photos by three previously calibrated examiners. Cohens kappa value was 0.78. More than half of the students (54 %) had erosive wear, more males than females, although not significantly different. There was no association between dietary habits and erosive lesions, but a significant association with physical activity, p=0.039. Most participants (88 %) consumed water during exercise, and there was no association between drinks during exercise and erosive lesions. All students had heard about dental erosion and 75 % assumed they could prevent lesions themselves. Most students (87 %) reported engagement in health behaviour, trying to reduce intake of erosive beverages. Regardless students complex aetiology, an important challenge for dental health personnel is early diagnosis and information on preventive strategies.
