ELIXIR-Italy Laniakea: results and future perspectives

View through CrossRef
ELIXIR-Italy led the development of Laniakea [1-3], a software framework that facilitates the provisioning of on-demand Galaxy instances as a cloud service over e-infrastructures. With an easy-to-use interface, Laniakea grants to its end users access to private, production-grade, fully customizable, Galaxy virtual instances. Laniakea supports both stand-alone and cluster backed Galaxy instances, shared reference data volumes, encrypted data volumes, and the rapid development of novel Galaxy flavours for specific tasks. Access to Laniakea@ReCaS Galaxy on-demand service is provided on a per-project basis through an open-ended call defining terms and conditions. Project proposals are evaluated by a scientific and technical board. Accepted proposals are granted a package of computational resources for running on-demand Galaxy instances for a duration compatible with the project requirements. An interesting and somewhat unexpected result of this service is that Laniakea is being actively used as a platform to promptly develop and make available novel Galaxy based services as PIPE-T [4], in press, and VINYL [5], submitted. In order to build integrated and interoperable services for ELIXIR and the wider Life Science user community as a whole, the development of Laniakea continues in the framework of the EOSC-Pillar [6] H2020 project. EOSC-Pillar coordinates and harmonises national efforts across Austria, Belgium, France, Germany and Italy, federating national initiatives, through common policies, FAIR services, shared standards and technologies. The last developments of Laniakea and the results of its integration with other EOSC-Pillar services will be presented at the ELIXIR All Hands. Moreover, we will show the achievements of the first year of public exploitation, started in December 2018 with the beta program and followed by the current production phase, also with the presentation of the most relevant use cases. Title: ELIXIR-Italy Laniakea: results and future perspectives
