Jan Blahoslav a jeho obrazy v českém dějepisectví a ve společnosti

View through CrossRef
Jan Blahoslav is considered an important Czech humanist of the 16th century and one of the key figures of the (original) Unity of Brethren. However, he only became widely known at the end of the 18th and in the 19th centuries, and subsequently received broad, albeit rather fitful attention from historians. The author analyses the development of Blahoslav research in both national and confessional historiography, emphasizing the key steps in works by A. Gindely in the 19th century, Book on Blahoslav (1923), biography by J. Janáček (1966), new conference proceedings (1971), and most recently a monograph by J. Just (2019). Blahoslav’s broader reception in the Protestant church and Czech national environment is also outlined. The author shows that in some respects Blahoslav’s work was overestimated, which, however, does not diminish his importance for the formation of the national Reformation, especially the Bible translation tradition.
