Philosophical Analysis of Andrey Tarkovsky’s Film “Andrey Rublev”
View through CrossRef
The article aims to conduct a philosophical study of A. Tarkovsky’s cinematic utterance in the fi lm “Andrey Rubdev”, to identify the semantic structure of the fi lm, to show the movement of the director’s thought and at the same time the semantic gaps arising along this path, as well as to analyze the criticism regarding the fi lm. The author shows that the central problem of the fi lm is the questioning of the ultimate foundations of human existence, which the director himself regarded as a phenomenon of spirituality and religiosity. The structure of the fi lm is based on the opposition “light – darkness”, which is revealed in the subsequent oppositions, such as “top – bottom”, “knowledge – ignorance”, “church – people” and so on. Tracing how the director works with these oppositions, the author comes to the conclusion that the problem of anthropodicy posed in the fi lm is resolved in the idea of a human creator. These conclusions show the one-sidedness of the assessment of Tarkovsky’s fi lm as anti-patriotic and anti-Christian.
