The name of the General, Sakanoue no Tamuramaro is related to that of the Kiyomizu temple in Kyoto, in whose construction he contributed money. The picture represents a scene from the play Noh “Tamura.” Visiting Kiyomizu temple, three traveling priests meet a man who sweeps the petals of cherry flowers. This is the spirit of the Tamuramaro warrior.
