Philip V of Anjou was proclaimed heir to the Spanish Habsburgs and thus King of Spain by his grandfather Louis XIV of France in 1700. His reign was confirmed after the Wars of the Spanish Succession (1701 - 1714).\nThis made him the first Bourbon on the Spanish throne. Philip, born on 19 December 1683 in Versailles, was King of Spain from 1700 until his death in 1746, until 1713 also King of Sardinia as well as King of Sicily and Naples.\nThe rare portrait engraving by Cornelis Vermeulen was made in Antwerp after a large-format pastel drawing by Joseph Vivien (1657 - 1734), which is preserved in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen in Schloß Schleißheim/Munich.
