What role should a Roma Museum have within the landscape of European cultural institutions? (2/5)

(Part 2 of 5) For ERIAC´s RomaMoMA blog, ERIAC asked Roma and non-Roma artists and arts professionals to reflect upon the following question: What role should a Roma Museum have within the landscape of European cultural institutions? One respondent summed up the museum’s role using three keywords: support, space and promotion. Another highlighted the museum’s connecting role, as a tool to overcome the current divisions that Europe is experiencing, and to positively affirm and recognise the complex identities of the Roma. A strong connection to the landscape of European progressive art institutions was mentioned as a vital solution to avoid perpetrating a Eurocentric view on art, where heteronormativity still plays a key role. There is a desire for a new museum to connect to art spaces that celebrate diversity and engage with an antiracist agenda. This view was shared by another interviewee, who understands RomaMoMA as a chance to shape the environment for deeper understanding and policy making, through a structure that both contests privileged narratives and develops as a transnational concept.
