Ranskalaisen sosiologin, Pierre Bourdieun perintö kasvatussosiologialle elää vahvana edelleen – vai elääkö? Kulttuurinen pääoma on yksi Bourdieun hyödynnetyimmistä käsitteistä, jonka hän määrittelee kilpailtuna, melko vaikeasti saatavissa olevana ja vanhemmilta lapsille periytyvänä resurssina, kuten kulttuurisina arvostuksina, normeina ja asenteina. Kulttuurisen pääoman avulla Bourdieu pyrki selittämään, miksi korkeammin koulutettujen vanhempien lapset pärjäävät koulussa paremmin matalammin koulutettujen vanhempien lapsiin verrattuna. Bourdieun myöhemmässä tuotannossa kulttuurisen pääoma sai uusia merkityksiä yhteiskuntaluokan statuksellisena osoittimena ja kulttuurisen maun distinktioina. Tässä katsauksessa siirrän katseeni kulttuurisen pääoman antiin eräänä keskeisenä Bourdieun teoreettis-käsitteellisen apparaatin palasena ja erilaisten kasvatussosiologisten ilmiöiden jäsentämisen työkaluna Bourdieun kasvatussosiologista perintöä samalla pohdiskellen.
