Abstract
Theophilus Opoku, a 19th-century pastor in the Gold Coast, wrote 37 reports to the Basel Mission (1868–1908). Detailed and vivid, they give rare insight into the process of conversion, customary rites, everyday life, and conflict in the kingdom of Akuapem. The anthropologist Michelle Gilbert and the historian Paul Jenkins, who have engaged with these reports over a period of close to 50 years, skilfully introduce the reports and their rich annotations allow the reader to unlock the treasures contained therein.
