CHAPTER FIVE Viotti's Achievement Thus Far

View through CrossRef
AbstractThis chapter discusses and evaluates Viotti's immediate influence on violin playing in Paris and elsewhere, chiefly through his compositions, especially his violin concertos, and his playing and that of his pupils, chief among whom was Pierre Rode. A veritable Viotti school of violin playing was established by his pupils and followers, particularly in the Paris Conservatoire, which trained several generations of violinists. The violin methods of Viotti's three principal followers, Rode, Rodolph Kreutzer, and Pierre Baillot, were extremely influential. The influence of Viotti's violin concertos on such composers as Ludwig Spohr, Mozart, and Beethoven is considered.
