Perspective on Ichnogenus Bergaueria from the Nagaur Group, Marwar Supergroup, India

View through CrossRef
ABSTRACT Among the notable trace fossils of the Cambrian period, ichnogenus Bergaueria holds a prominent position. This is a widely occurring trace fossil, found across diverse environmental settings. Ichnogenus Bergaueria is documented from the Nagaur Sandstone of the Marwar Supergroup, but its evolutionary significance remains largely unexamined. Bergaueria shows a remarkable temporal range, extending from the Cambrian to the Ordovician period, with rare occurrences in the Neogene. As an r-strategist species, Bergaueriais of particular interest due to its distinctive traits, widespread geographic distribution, and frequent association with co-occurring trace fossils such as Cruziana, Rusophycus, Monomorphichnusand Skolithosin the same stratigraphic layers. This study focuses on 46 specimens recovered from the Nagaur Sandstone exposed in Dulmera quarry situated on the outskirts of the Bikaner District, Rajasthan. The study aims to describe the characteristics of Bergaueria, evaluate their palaeoenvironmental implications, and explore their evolutionary significance within the Marwar Supergroup, contributing to broader insights into the early Phanerozoic biosphere.
