AbstractFlemish composer of the Italian Renaissance. Hailed as “the new Pythagoras” by his student Gioseffo Zarlino, Willaert developed a reputation as one of the most celebrated European musicians of the 16th century. Through his post as choir master at the basilica of St. Mark's in Venice, Willaert founded the Venetian school, known for the antiphonal and polychoral style of its sacred music, and for decisively shaping the stylistic shift from the Renaissance to the Baroque.
