Egyptian Head in Basalt, TB 003
View through Europeana Collections
The lower half of a small head carved in basalt shows individual features suggesting a portrait. The top and back of the head have been completely removed. The left eye, except its lower frame and both ears are missing. The features are soft and rounded with quite a large round tipped nose and closed lips. On the base of what would have been the left ear is a protruding sub-square lobe of stone which may represent the remains of hair or a headdress. The base of the head is broken and badly abraded so it is difficult to assess whether this may once have been part of a larger figurative statue. It has been assigned a date in the Middle Kingdom and in particular the 11th or 12th dynasties.
