This chapter treats the legal and religious status of women and some of the changes in that status over the period of the dharma sūtras and Manu, covering the following topics: lack of independence and the guarding of women; legal status and the growing visibility of women to the law as shown by the treatment of adultery; women’s life stages and the male figures associated with them; ritual partnership in marriage; life-cycle rites, especially with regard to conception, pregnancy and childbirth, menstrual and childbirth taboos; women’s property (strīdhana) and inheritance; and roles for women, including mother, spinster, appointed daughter (putrikā), courtesan, and nun/renunciate.
