Zoning and Classification of High-Fluctuation-Belts of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region

View through CrossRef
Abstract The operation of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) had produced High-Fluctuation-Belts(HFBs). The treatment and restoration around the HFB has become a major scientific issue after the impoundment of the TGD. This article focused on the treatment and restoration of HFB in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region (TGRR), so as to improve the scientific level of the treatment and restoration of the HFBs in the TGRR. Firstly, the multiple objectives of HFB in the TGRR were analyzed, zoning and classification of bank slopes was discussed to satisfy the treatment and restoration. Secondly, it synthesized a variety of HFB treatment and restoration alternatives, including natural restoration, ecological restoration, ecological bank protection modification and comprehensive restoration measures. Finally, it proposed a combination of zoning and classification of treatment or restoration programs for the HFB in the TGRR. The programs includes almost all types of the HFB in the TGRR, which not only meet the needs of slope stabilization for HFB, but also determine the water level threshold for ecological restoration, and they have reference values for optimization of treatmentt or restoration for the HFBs of the TGRR.
