Images of 3D model of Augusteum at Herculaneum

Image of the 3D model of the Augusteum (cd. Basilica) by Herculaneum. The CD Basilica is a large square paved with marble plates, bordered by porches on all sides and with a square exedra at the center of the background side, framed by two side apses. In the central exedra were placed the lorinated statue of Titus (MANN, inv. 6059) and those seated by Claudius and Augustus, depicted as Jupiter enthroned (inv. 6040 and 6056); the side apses were decorated with the large paintings of IV Stile depicting the following subjects: the recognition of Telephus by Hercules (inv. 9008), which is believed to be derived from Apelles' Hercules Aversus mentioned by Pliny the Elder in the Temple. In the basements placed in front of the apses were instead the bronze statues of Augustus and Claudius in heroic nudity (inv.5595); the decoration of the side porticos finally belonged to a frieze illustrating episodes and feats of Hercules' life and a panel with Medea (inv. 8976). Statues of many figures of the July-Claudia and Flavia dynasty were also to be crowded in the building. Several modern hypotheses about the destination of this building, among them the one that recognizes the Augusteum, the building used for imperial worship, whose construction dates from the Claudian age, with subsequent updates on the plan of sculptural furniture.
