TheHomeric Hymnsas Poetic Offerings

AbstractThis chapter considers, from the point of view of enunciative modes, the nature of the Homeric Hymns as musical offerings to the divinities which they celebrate. The formal constituents of the Hymns, which are shown to consist of the evocatio, epica laus, and preces are treated in detail in three separate sections. Particular attention is given to the portrayal of musical performance in the Homeric Hymns and it is argued that the Hymns serve as poetic contracts between gods and mortals. Attention is throughout given to the performance context of the Hymns in ancient Greece.
