Henry W. Gray and Henry V. Carter: united and separated by a human anatomy textbook

Henry W. Gray (1827-1861) and Henry V. Carter (1831-1897), physicians and surgeons from the Saint George’s Hospital in London, England, worked together in anatomical dissections to get the most accurate representation possible in accordance with Gray’s written text. Furthermore, Henry Gray as professor of Anatomy and curator of the hospital's museum did outstanding anatomical works. He was a member of the Royal Society and the Royal College of Surgeons. The excellence of Carter's illustrations contributed greatly to the success of their Anatomy, Descriptive and Surgical. Carter received neither credit nor royalties for his work. However, later Henry Carter had a successful career as a researcher on Leprosy and other tropical diseases in India. Their famous textbook known as Grey’s Anatomy, is now regarded as one of the most influential human Anatomy textbooks. The aim of this paper is to present a brief review of Henry W. Gray’s and Henry V. Carter’s contributions in the medical field.
