Gandhi: Hind Swaraj, 1909 Excerpt: "When we think of people carrying on the legacy of Mohandas Gandhi, we tend to think of eloquent, charismatic, and popular male leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela, and Vaclav Havel. Each of these prominent figures promoted mass participation in courageous nonviolent resistance to confront racial, political, and social injustices, and to reform or build modern forms of liberal democracy. Hind Swaraj or Indian Home Rule shows, however, that Gandhi’s primary concern was achieving individual, communal, and national swaraj or self-rule in the face of violent colonizing systems of modern Western civilization."
