New perspective-picture: Battle at Jiuxian-shan in China

Utagawa Toyoharu no to UU様様様 The theme of this perspective (uki-e U) is taken from the historical drama “The Battle of Kokusen 'ya 様 UUU” by Chikamatsu Monzaemon 様 UUUabout Watonai (= Kokusen' ya), who fought against the Qing dynasty to preserve the Ming dynasty. While he is hiding among the hermits of Jiuxian-shan (jap: Kyūsenzan Während 様様), one of his faithful, Wu San-gui, has a vision of Watonai’s victory after five years of struggle. A variation of this leaf of Toyoharu in the British Museum (see Lit.). A similar picture structure in a Chinese theme at Hokusai see: Ukiyo-e masterpieces in europ. collections: vol 4 V & A I ill. 164. In the use of landscape and architectural elements, the London leaf is similar to Hokusai’s mentioned earlier.
