The artist, whose life is little documented, appears to have been a pupil of David Teniers and became master of the liking in Brussels in 1654. He has produced several similar scenes of company outside an inn, most of which are in Dutch and Belgian museums. In the past, this painting has been described as a wedding scale. However, there is no basis for describing the young couple sitting in the background eating such as bride and groom. It seems to be a portrait of the man in the foreground, probably the owner of the inn, and the young couple are probably members of the same family.
