Au début du Chant III de l’Iliade, Hector propose à son frère Pâris de régler par un duel avec Ménélas l’issue de la guerre de Troie. Le défi est lancé et l’Atride le relève, mais à la condition que Priam, et non ses fils, dont il se défie, règle le combat. Toutefois, Ménélas n’évoque pas la sagesse du souverain troyen, mais convoque au contraire « la force de Priam » : Πϱιάμοιο βίην. Or la « force » dont il est question ici, la βίη, est en grec toute physique, souvent martiale, violente et brutale, et parfaitement absente des vieillards, qui l’ont perdue. Cette étrange formule constitue donc presque un oxymore et mérite qu’on s’y arrête.
