Tredici anni prima della pubblicazione de L'Annonciation italienne. Une histoire de perspective (Paris, 1999), esso presenta la genesi delle intuizioni arassiane sulla rappresentazione dell'Annuncio a Maria nel Quattrocento e sulla sua affinità particolare con la "costruzione legittima". Le idee e le tesi de L'Annonciation italienne sono già in nuce in questa comunicazione, che aprì nel 1986 un vivo dibattito tra i partecipanti e inaugurò una discussione di quasi un quarto di secolo sulla rappresentazione dell'Annuncio a Maria e sulla sua portata simbolica nel Rinascimento.
