Abstract
The introductory chapter provides the rationale for studying negotiating strategies, particularly in the context of multilateral trade negotiations at the GATT/WTO. It provides a bird’s-eye view of existing literature on negotiating strategies at GATT/WTO—the platform for negotiating the framework of rules for the conduct of international trade among countries. It briefly discusses the role of state strength in determining negotiating outcomes. Turning to domestic determinant of negotiating outcomes, it focuses attention on resolving multiplicity of conflicting interests among stakeholders and how interactions at the domestic level affect negotiating flexibility. The chapter concludes by providing an overview of each of the subsequent nine chapters of the book.
