Il mito in scena: Endimione e Diana ne Gli amori della luna di Margherita Costa

View through CrossRef
In Margherita Costa’s last work, Gli amori della luna, it is possible to identify a significant echo of her previous writings. Diana, in particular, inherits traits pertaining to the female figures of her earlier love songbooks. The goddess, like the women in La Chitarra, is an amante di sdegno (disdain’s lover) who invests the lover of her anger and disappointment at being abandoned. The mythological frame, however, contains a representation of the courtly life Costa is very well aquainted with. The inclusion of comic and spectacular elements helps to define the theatricality of Margherita Costa’s writing and to situate it appropriately in the baroque culture to which it belongs.
