Enhancement of community participation in the peatland restoration in Tanjung leban village, Riau province, Indonesia

The peatland restoration required participation from various stakeholders, including the community. In Indonesia, the Peatland Restoration Agency used the social approach to enhance community participation in the peatland restoration program. Unfortunately, there were some limitations to enhancing community participation in the peatland restoration. This research highlighted the limitation of community participation and examined suitable measures to enhance community participation in the peatland restoration. This research was conducted in Tanjung Leban Village, Riau Province in Indonesia. Both primary and secondary methods of collecting reliable data and adequate information were adopted in the study area. The primary sources of data include the personal interview and the questionnaire administered to the study area. There were five target groups: the government, community organizations, community groups, local residents, and experts in this research. Based on the result, the research found an increasing number of active participants in the peatland restoration program in the study area. The research also found that there is a significant gap between active and passive participation in the program. The research indicated that economic interest is the main limitation of this case. Thus, the research recommended a new strategy for the economic scheme through fisheries. This research also found that peatland restoration required partnership among relevant stakeholders to ensure the future of peatland restoration in Tanjung Leban. The outcome of this research would be an analysis of gaps and limitations of community participation in peatland restoration and be a future alternative to enhance community participation in peatland restoration
