Hoarding in Burgundy, France

View through CrossRef
Chapter 4 presents some results of the Trésors Monétaires de la Gaule (TreMoG) project, a collaboration between French and English scholars funded by the CNRS which began in 2016. Its goal is to fill a major lacuna in the digital coverage and study of hoards from Roman Antiquity found in central and eastern Gaul. This chapter focuses on Burgundy, chosen as a case-study region which demonstrates the potential of the project; it has not been covered by the TAF series (Trésors Antiques de la France), but has a large amount of new or unpublished data in archives or recent archaeological reports. Moreover, Burgundy equates to the territory of the ancient civitas Aeduorum, one of the richest and most powerful people of Gaul and it was thought that it might be profitable to study coin hoarding in a particularly well-documented civic territory. Entering TreMoG data into the Coin Hoards of the Roman Empire Project database began in April 2016. This chapter presents a preliminary analysis of the archaeological contexts and spatial and temporal distribution of Roman coin hoards in Burgundy.
