CORRELATION OF THE SIZE OF LIVER ABSCESS AND LIVER FUNCTION TEST: AN EXPERIENCE AT TERTIARY CARE CENTRE, UDAIPUR (RAJASTHAN)

Introduction: Liver abscess is collection of pus within the liver parenchyma, rst described by Hippocrates, especially prevalent in tropical regions. It includes three types: pyogenic, amoebic, and fungal. Pyogenic abscesses, accounting for 80% of cases, are often polymicrobial, while amoebic abscesses result from Entamoeba histolytica. Diagnosis is challenging due to overlapping symptoms, requiring imaging and cultures. Objective: To analyse correlation of size of liver abscess with Liver function test (LFT) and TLC . Methods: The study is a hospital based descriptive epidemiological study collecting dataon LFT and liver abscess size from patients diagnosed with liver abscess based on radiological investigation. Results: In this study of 50 patients, the majority were male (84%) with a mean age of 42.66 years. Common symptoms were fever (92%) and abdominal pain (90%). Hepatomegaly (80%) and abdominal tenderness (60%) were frequent ndings. This study revealed TLC, SBT, SGOT, SGPT, ALP and INR have positive correlaation with abscess size while negative correlation between serum albumin and abscess size . Treatment involved ultrasound-guided aspiration (80%), with a mortality rate of 6% due to complications like MODS and septicemia . Conclusion: The size of liver abscess have positive correlation with TLC , SBT, SGOT, SGPT, ALP, INR and negative correlation with Serum albumin .
