Abstract The favorable early line on John Huston derived almost entirely from two sources: James Agee’s 1950 Life essay, “Undirectable Director,” and Lillian Ross’s New Yorker articles on the making of The Red Badge of Courage, published as Picture in 1952. Both pieces were essentially puffs, with Agee’s so gushing that it would quickly win its author the chance to collaborate with Huston on The African Queen: Most of the really good popular art produced anywhere comes from Hollywood, and much of it bears Huston’s name. To put it conservatively [?!], there is nobody under fifty at work in movies, here or abroad, who can excel Huston in talent, inventiveness, intransigence, achievement or promise.
