TEACHING CHINESE IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS OF UKRAINE: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS
View through CrossRef
The article monitors key trends in Chinese language teaching and learning in various universities of Ukraine, which will allow a deeper understanding of existing problems and take measures to solve them. It is clarified how the legislation of Ukraine creates the necessary regulatory and legal conditions for studying foreign languages, including Chinese, in educational institutions (including higher education institutions).
The results of the surveys, as well as the experience of teaching work and work in focus groups, show that many Ukrainian students of education show a desire to learn Chinese (either during classroom time, or simultaneously during classroom and extracurricular time), and the vast majority of students would like to learn Chinese with native speakers. From an economic point of view, this is a factor in the demand for a certain educational service (Chinese language teaching). On the other hand, the vast majority of higher education institutions in Ukraine cannot offer such an educational service as Chinese language teaching in the current conditions.
Сurrently Ukrainian institutions of higher education do not have sufficient organizational and economic resources to start the latest educational programs, as well as to expand existing educational programs, including in the part of extensive teaching of the Chinese language, even despite the presence of demand from students (consumers of educational services ). After all, the organization of learning any foreign language, in particular Chinese, is a complex process that must be provided with specialized equipment, qualified personnel, educational and methodical literature.
Chinese specialized organizations, including the Confucius Institutes, will continue to make efforts to provide practical assistance to Ukrainian higher education institutions in terms of stimulating the teaching of the Chinese language, as well as improving the quality of such teaching. Moreover, this work will be carried out in various sectors, including among institutions of higher education, which:
- Chinese is taught as the main foreign language;
- Chinese is taught as an additional language;
- do not teach Chinese, but intend to start teaching Chinese.
For example, the Confucius Institute of the Kyiv National Linguistic University is currently developing additional tools for collecting relevant information, as well as conducting consultations with the heads of higher education institutions that have expressed a desire to organize Chinese language teaching.
The main emphasis of our analysis is aimed at continuing the study of the problems and difficulties of organizing the teaching and learning of the Chinese language in Ukraine, as well as the reasons for the lack of Chinese language teaching.
