Mystikk, «svermeri» og religiøs toleranse hos Hans Nielsen Hauge

View through CrossRef
Hans Nielsen Hauge (1771–1824), the leader of the radical Haugean movement in Norway, has for a long time been the object of incompatible interpretations. This article claims that Hauge’s religious thinking and practice was inspired by German mysticism and the early Pietism of Johann Arndt. Hauge was originally criticized for advocating religious “mysticism,” “enthusiasm” and Schwärmerei, but according to Hauge these movements – including the Haugean movement – represented living Christianity. For Hauge God’s internal presence in the soul and heart of every human being became an important argument for religious tolerance.
