The type section of the Skagit Gneiss, North Cascades, Washington
View through CrossRef
Abstract
Figure 1 shows access to, and location of, the Skagit Gneiss field sites. These sites are shown on the geologic map, Figure 1) 2. The 12.4-mi (20-km) type section is now accessible by Washington 20. A detailed road log was published by Misch (1977, p. 35–46). Twelve recommended stops are indicated on the map by mileages (calibrated by mile markers). For a quick trip, the best stops are at mile 125.1 and 125.8.
The Skagit Gneiss provides a spectacular display of migmatitic regional metamorphism in the core of a young mobile belt. It is in pristine condition like the Nanga Parbat migmatite but is readily accessible.
