Dogmaty liberalne prowokują do buntu. Ortodoksja rodzi heterodoksję. Centrum generuje heretyków i skazuje na doktrynalny margines. Liberalizm sensu largo, rozumiany jako filozofia polityczna oparta na założeniach indywidualistycznych, pozwala zaliczyć do liberalnej szkoły myślenia bohatera niniejszej pracy – autora, którego ideowa tożsamość przy stosowaniu bardziej restrykcyjnych klasyfikacji byłaby trudna do określenia. Henry David Thoreau miał problem z samoograniczeniem, pohamowaniem indywidualnych roszczeń i uznaniem praw innych. Postulował równość, niemniej jednak odnosił ją jedynie do sfery materialnej, w której czuł się ofiarą nierówności. W dziedzinie wartości idealnych, które dawały mu poczucie przewagi nad otoczeniem, głosił hasła elitarystyczne. Cenił wolność, ale lekceważył jej prawne zabezpieczenia. Zajmował się głównie wymiarem duchowym ludzkiej autonomii, zależnym od pracy wewnętrznej jednostki.
