Parthian Hatra and the Artistic koinè in the Figurative Arts of the Syrian-Mesopotamian Steppe

View through CrossRef
Abstract This chapter investigates the possible influence of political allegiances on interaction of artistic forms in cities of the Syrian-Mesopotamian Desert during the first centuries ad. The focus is on sculptures from Hatra, the only city in this group that was connected to the Arsacid Empire for most of its existence. The sculptural and pictorial remains from these cities are thought to testify to an artistic koinè during the first three centuries ad. Recent research, however, stresses that the figurative arts in these cities also have pronounced local characteristics. This chapter argues that some of this is the result of Hatra’s allegiance to Parthia. After a short introduction to Hatra and its political and religious organization, the concept of an artistic koinè in Syrian-Mesopotamian cities will be evaluated. The chapter concludes with an in-depth analysis of Hatra’s sculptural remains and their relationship with sculptures from Syria.
