An Ayurvedic approach in the management of Pansinusitis with special reference to Dushta-Pratishyaya: A Case Report

Pansinusitis is a condition when all the sinuses in the head become infected or inflamed. Symptoms of pansinusitis are like pressure, tenderness, pain in the front of the face, severe nasal congestion, headache in the front of the head, earache etc. It can be correlated with Dushta Pratishyaya in Ayurveda. Dushta Pratishyaya is a Nasagata Roga. Its symptoms are Praklidhyati Nasa (~sliminess) and Nasa Parishuhkta (~dryness), Nasanaha (~Nasal congestion) and Muhur Vivriyate (~No Congestion), Nishwasochchhvasa Daurgandhya (~fetor in the breath) and Gandhan Na Veti (~loss of smell) in Ayurveda. A 26 years old female patient visited OPD of Shalakyatantra Department at Govt. Akhandanand Ayurveda Hospital, Ahmedabad with chief complains of Nasanaha, Nishwasuchchhvasa Daurgandhya, Shirashula, Shirogauravata, Facial pain, Karnashula and Shwasa Kastata. In treatment of Pratishyaya Shirovirechana, Virechana, Asthapana Basti, Dhumpana and Kavalagraha mentioned by Acharya Sushruta. On examination and with investigations patient was diagnosed as Dushta Pratishyaya (Pansinusitis). The patient was treated with Avpeedana Shodhana Nasya followed by Snehashodhana Nasya with Shamana Aushadhas. This treatment resulted in recovery from the disease.
