Mark Gonnerman’s essay presents an intersection between Joanne Kyger, Gary Snyder, and Allen Ginsberg via a photograph Ginsberg took of the couple and a Buddhist priest on a boat at the Sea of Japan in 1963. Gonnerman brings the three together for the photograph’s moment in time (what Ginsberg considers a sacramental union) and then disperses them at the end of his essay to their respective singular lives as Snyder and Kyger break up. Snyder continues Zen study in Japan, Kyger returns to California and subsequently moves to Bolinas, and Ginsberg takes up his place as major figure in the Beat Movement in the States. The essay is about personal relationships and marriage (Kyger and Snyder) as well as Kyger’s relationship to Beat writers, and sets the stage for Kyger’s further development independent of Beat Generation Dharma Bums.
