The Silent Men and the chiefs of Soviet Belarus in 1937–1939

I. N. Romanova's research touches on a wide range of problems: the results of collectiviz a tion in the BSSR and, in particular, in its border areas; peasants' perception of the socio-economic and cultur al processes in which they were involved; attempts to resist government interventions; peculiarities of pop u lar religiosity in conditions of persecution of the church, repression among the Soviet and party nomencl a ture and mass operations; changes in public policy and their consequences at the institutional level and at the level of everyday life. The book begins with a review of an incident that occurred in the Lepel district of the BSSR at the time of the population census in January 1937, an incident that launched a whole series of events and eventually acquired national significance. Despite the fact that the analysis of the consequences of the "Lepel affair" often leads I. N. Romanova into the field of big politics, she returns with surprising consta n cy to the starting point – the situation of Belarusian peasants: collective farmers and sole proprietors. I. N. has his own subject. Romanova purposefully restricts time and space, using various types of sources for the reconstruction of events: archival documents; interviews of children, relatives and fellow villagers of pa r ticipants in the events; publications in the periodical press; normative documents. The problems raised in the study and the proposed conclusions are debatable in nature, but are of undoubted interest to anyone in terested in the history of pre-war Soviet society.
