A rare case of sialolithiasis
156-9
Sialoliths of the minor salivary gland is a rare occurrence,
accounting for only 2 % of salivary glands stones. Their cause is
not completely known, and many factors may play a part in their formation.
Sialolithiasis may be characterized by swelling and pain in the
affected area, and in some instances symptoms are exacerbated in
relation to food ingestion. Symptoms are often similar to other
oral patologi, diagnosis is therefor difficult.
Treatment include excision of the sialolith and in some instances the
gland itself.
Because of their radiologic characteristics, additional radiological
examination including CBCT may be indicated, but a combination of
clinical, radiological and histopathological examination is fundamental
to establish a correct diagnosis.
In the present case, the use of CBCT (Cone-Beam CT) showed to be
a valuable tool for localization and diagnosis of a sialolith.
