Lower part of a diptych? (other part not in the MAK) Kunisadaga Kun様 scene from the Kabuki play “Seki no to Kunの Kun.” The border guard Sekibei has to cut down a cherry tree to perform a ritual that makes him the ruler of the country. Before he succeeds, however, the spirit of the tree appears and overwhelms it. The clouds in the upper part of the picture could indicate that this is a vertical diptych that shows, in the upper part, perhaps Somezome, the spirit of the cherry tree. Ichikawa Danjūrō is depicted in the role of Sekibei.
