Corrosion of Concentric Neutrals

View through CrossRef
In recent years there has been a sudden burst of interest in what is called the "Corrosion of Concentric Neutrals on Buried URD Cable." Some of the background of this was given by the author in 1975. In this paper, the author reports on some of his research results over the last several years. The term "URD Cable" covers a variety of materials that are buried in the earth but the one of particular interest is that composed of an insulated conductor over which is extruded a shield of carbon filled polyethylene and wrapped spirally with ribbons or wires of metal having good conductivity. These may be pure copper, copper coated with tin or a lead-tin alloy, or aluminum. This paper will be restricted to copper or coated copper concentric neutrals on the shielded cable.
