Spotlight on the Calvinists
View through Europeana Collections
Spotlight on the Calvinists. On three levels different scenes take place; the leader is the link between the levels. Two groups of different denominations have gathered at the bottom of the ladder; Lutherans with Luther at the top on the right; Calvinists on the left. One of these, clearly identified as Ulrich Zwingli, has begun to climb the ladder, but the sprout breaks under him. Luther holds the sword raised as a symbol of God’s Word in his hands and directs it against the opponents. Behind the Calvinists on the left is the devil. One of his victims lies in a net caught on the ground, another is locked in a cage. He captures hearts, he uses corpses like a bird catcher, where some hearts stick (seen behind the cage). In the middle level, the different sacraments of the denominations are compared. On the left, a Calvinist sacrament takes place in a tent - with the devil as a guest. To the right, the Lord’s Supper of the Lutherans, who has been approved by God, faces a large altar decorated with a painting of the transfiguration of Christ and a rising crucifix. The ladder leads to an open parade, the “Lade of the Secret of God,” which is to be looted by the Calvinists. Next to it, God’s father and Christ, who are tied to the throne with a chain.
