Features of Anti-Americanism in the Republic of Korea

Problem statement. This article is dedicated to the analysis of the phenomenon of anti-Americanism in the Republic of Korea ‒ a complex and multifaceted occurrence affecting many spheres of societal life. At the current stage, a widespread perception has formed that in the Republic of Korea, as one of the principal partners of the USA in East Asia, there is a complete absence of any pluralism of opinions regarding Washington’s policies. However, annually, questions arise in the Korean political discourse that cast doubt on the strength of support for interaction between the two countries. The viewpoint is put forward that the system termed “situational anti-Americanism” does not fully reflect the spectrum of opinions within Korean society, and in connection with this, other concepts describing this phenomenon are also analyzed. The object of research is Korean-American relations as a whole, while the subject is specific manifestations of anti-American sentiments. The aim of the work is to analyze the main features of contemporary anti-Americanism in the Republic of Korea. The primary methods used in the research are: the general inductive method, which was employed to form conclusions about the main trends; and the analysis of statistical information provided by various organizations. The scientific novelty is determined by the fact that this work is one of the first studies comprehensively analyzing anti-Americanism in contemporary South Korea. The main emphasis is placed on the differences in its analysis adopted in academic circles. The result of the research is up-to-date information on the main characteristic features of this movement. In the future, it will be further developed in other works related to the internal politics of the Republic of Korea. The practical significance is determined by the role of this article in updating the knowledge of contemporary Korean studies experts and researchers studying issues of public assessment of politics.
