This postscript begins by looking at the concept of the “circle of natural connections,” which offers a way to build the natural world into our day-to-day lives. Humans have always had an emotional connection with the natural world, but the relationship is neither consistent nor simple. On the one hand, humans perceive nature as nurturing and life-giving. On the other hand, the natural world is a hazardous place that is inhabited by dangerous and venomous creatures and is the source of countless catastrophes. Engaging in natural history enhances our appreciation of the natural world. Ultimately, feeling an emotional attachment to a place and coming to know a little about the organisms that live there lead to a desire to look after the place and its inhabitants. The postscript then addresses environmental stewardship and explains the art of strategic neglect in creating a wild-life friendly backyard. In the author's household, much of the discussion about what to neglect and how to intervene has revolved around three issues: alien plants, the creatures that eat the garden plants, and feeding the birds.
