Papież Franciszek wobec wojny rosyjsko-ukraińskiej (2014–2023). Wybór dokumentów

The monograph “Pope Francis and the Russo-Ukrainian War (2014–2023). Selected Documents” by Sylwia Góra, is the first comprehensive study in Polish scholarly literature dedicated to the position and engagement of Pope Francis and the Holy See regarding the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. The publication presents a curated selection of papal documents, speeches, messages, and statements from 2013 to 2023, arranged chronologically to illustrate the dynamics of papal interventions and the evolution of the Vatican’s stance as the conflict escalated. The author analyzes both the general statements of Pope Francis on peace and war, as well as his specific references to the situation in Ukraine. The work highlights the wide range of diplomatic, humanitarian, and charitable actions undertaken by the Pope and the Holy See, including calls to end the war, appeals for dialogue and mediation, and support for the victims of the conflict. Special attention is given to the papal concepts of the “culture of encounter,” solidarity, and mercy as the foundations for building peace. The monograph demonstrates that Pope Francis has been actively involved in addressing the conflict from its outset, consistently issuing appeals, messages, and diplomatic initiatives, emphasizing the need to respect international law and protect civilians. The analysis of the documents shows that Francis’s pontificate is marked by a consistent rejection of war as a means of resolving disputes and by the promotion of dialogue and reconciliation. This publication fills a research gap and serves as an important reference point for further studies on the role of the Catholic Church in contemporary armed conflicts.
