Veiled Menace: Word-Play ( Ofljóst ) in a Stanza by Egill Skallagrímsson

Les trois poèmes improvisés que compose Egill Skallagrímsson au manoir royal sur l’île d’Atley dans la présence du roi Eiríkr, de sa reine Gunnhildr et de leur gérant Bárðr réalisent un crescendo narratif qui prend son départ dans un acte de jugement et passe par des actes rituels pour finir avec des menaces de revanche. Ils réalisent également un crescendo stylistique qui finit par un kenning (la métaphore nordique) qui est susceptible de pas moins de trois interprétations interdépendantes et qui tout aussi bien met en scène le procédé stylistique appelé ofljóst (trop clair), qui se constitue de substitutions et sémantiques et phonologiques dans des jeux de mots provocants, menaçants et diffamatoires.
