Abstract
Dioscoreales are a group of largely tropical, often climbing, plants with broad, reticulate‐veined leaves that make them look like ‘dicots’. The group contains plants that are important to humans as food and medicine, and includes the ‘true’ yams (
Dioscorea
). Yams may be among the earliest domesticated crops, and may be intimately connected with early human history and migrations.
